Sci-Fi+Action+Adventure = Itch

Updated: Jul 11, 2022

"Get excited!" the perfect quote from the perfect character for this post! (Senku Ishigami from

the manga/anime Dr. Stone).

Whereas Senku is living three thousand years and then some in the future, Itchingham Lofte is living in the present day. An incredible book that is based on the periodic table and this young man's explosive knowledge. The book 'Itch: The Explosive Adventures of an Element Hunter', by Simon Mayo, is just the beginning of a twisting trilogy that involves an accidental arsonist, a greedy back-stabbing teacher who goes to terrifying leaps and bounds to get what he claims to be his money, and staying one step ahead of government agents!

Through and through, the book is an attention keeper. How is one high school boy going to keep the most valuable rocks in existence away from billion dollar corporations? Away from entire governments?

While I freely admit it has been a while since I read the series, I do remember being captured in the first chapter by how great a work of literature Mr. Mayo wrote.

The idea itself behind the plot was ingenious and could not have been better thought of. As you can see on the cover, even the great Anthony Horowitz wrote, "A great debut. You'll be itching to read more." And this is coming from the man who wrote over forty books and sold over nineteen MILLION worldwide, just to give his word some credibility (Review on Alex Rider in the future).

While this cover picture of 'Itch' looks pretty cool, you'll see that the other two are just as good if not better! The second book is titled 'Itch Rocks', and the third titled 'Itch Craft'.

You simply cannot go wrong with this trilogy. People say you can't judge a book by its cover, but let's all be real here: yes, we do. we judge a person or a book in the end, and with covers like these and the advocate Anthony Horowitz for a well-written story, I would say that you've got this one in the bag (or cart if you're online shopping).

Of the many things that grabbed my attention in the book, one was being impressed at how someone so young could know the atomic weight of each and every periodic element. There was the accidental arsonist scenario, I had a great laugh at that one, and when I tried to share the humor with my family... well, as you all might understand, trying to share a moment from a book without explaining the entire book... it really kills the laughter.

I'm not sure if this scene is in the first book or not, but I really like how he uses his knowledge of science to cause explosions and distractions. I really don't want to spoil it for you guys, just in case you do read this!
